One of the finest documentaries I've seen in years is Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father, which had an enthusiastic reception last March at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin. The filmmaker is Kurt Kuenne, whom local audiences may remember as the director of the heavily Texas-flavored Drive-In Movie Memories, produced by Don and Susan Sanders of Grapevine. Mr. Kuenne informs me in an e-mail that Dear Zachary, now being shown theatrically in various cities (thus making it eligible for consideration in the upcoming Academy Awards), will make its national television debut on MSNBC on Dec. 7. No dates yet for any theatrical showings in Dallas, so don't miss the showing on MSNBC. The story is nothing short of amazing.

This documentary was one of the most remarkable I have ever seen. A true testament to love and courage. I am sure Andrew was as remarkable as this showed, as his parents are truly the type of people you know make this world a better place.

I don't get the first writer in this blog, unless he/she is from the Canadian establishment. Shame on them not on the film maker (and I am a Canadian citizen, though not a Canadian).
I sat rivetted throughout the film, with a great sense of dread, and could not get the story fast enough. What a tragedy! Beautifully done. The love of people for Andrew and the rage of Andrew's parents were palpable, and I felt them in my bones. Great job bringing Andrew and his family to life and showing us that the monsters around us do not look like monsters; they may even resemble us. That's why we need the justice system and child protection agencies to listen and take action when due, both of which failed miserably in Canada. There are many murderers who ONLY killed one person. That does not make them safe to walk amongs us. Why she was allowed out of this country - I didn't get but maybe there is an explanation.

Kurt,

Your documentary has truly touched my life. Andrew seemed like such an amazing person who touched the lives of so many people. The film made me cry numerous times and after Zachary was murdered I was sick to my stomach. One day I hope to have 1/3 as many friends as Andrew, and I take comfort in knowing that Andrew and Zachary are finally together and safe from Shirley. I recently lost my own father and I've had a really hard time lately but your film helped me deal my some of my feelings. It made me realize that I need to grieve for my father so I can develop and cherish the relationships I have on earth.

Thank you so much for telling me this story and good luck in all of your future endeavors, I know Andrew is watching over you.
