So, I set out on Tuesday after work with my Iron Man screening pass in hand with what I thought was more than enough time to park the car, get through any line there might be, and find a decent seat at Cinemark Movies 17 on Webb Chapel Road in Dallas. Well, you know what they say about best-laid plans and such ... Anyway, I get dropped off at 6:30 p.m., a whole hour before the screening's scheduled start, and make my way through the gaggle of people in front of the theater, thinking, "I've done this before; I know where to go." Well, before I could pull the pass all the way out of my purse, the doorkeeper (though she was standing at a table) said, "No." Switching to reporter mode when the (OK, if I must) tablekeeper asks if I'm "media," I ask her a few questions. Her answers: "It filled up by 5:30 p.m."; "I'd say we seated over 590 people"; "We even filled up an emergency second screening at 10 p.m.; that was over 590 people, too." I tell her that in Atlanta, unless the theater was small, I could show up five minutes before and get a seat. "Not in Dallas," she says. Duly noted. In Dallas, if it's a fanboy/fangirl movie, make sure you get to a screening at least two-and-a-half hours before start time. Know that the pass means it when it reads: " Please arrive early. Seating ... is NOT guaranteed," unlike the guy who interrupted my on-the-spot interview to try to talk his way in. Or else, you'll be going home to your animated movie (that's really not that bad), The Invincible Iron Man. |

At least the movie wasn't being screened at Northpark. There is a whole "clique" of people that only go to free screenings. They get there(speculating here) the morning of and save a place for their 20 friends. You'll recognize them when you hear the man with the deep voice pontificating upon the movies. A movie this anticipated will definitely fill up fast. I had to wait until Thursday, but I had tickets to see a movie for free and they honored them for Iron Man. Dallas is full of people that love their free screenings.
