Looks like Tom is in the minority on Speed Racer. Could this be his Black Dahlia?

I'm always happy to run counter to groupthink, but in this case I just really liked a movie that a lot of critics panned, although my review of their reviews is that most seemed to be judging the movie based on what they thought it should be rather than on what it was. The opening box office certainly did nothing to affirm my position (or did it?) I'm not surprised that Iron Man continued its domination. I'd like to think that Speed Racer may build by word-of-mouth and hold its own against Narnia's opening this weekend. But then comes Indiana Jones the next week and, of course, in this age, three weeks is an eternity. Who knows, Speed Racer may already be old news. But it would be a shame if people don't discover this movie until DVD -- this really is a movie that's made to be seen on the big screen. I can't imagine watching it on IMAX; I think your head may explode.
