Cinematographer William Fraker is best known for his work on Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby, and he'll be at the Angelika 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss the film after the USA Film Festival's screening. But he also has vivid memories of shooting Bullitt, the Steve McQueen film with one of the greatest chase scenes ever. At the time Fraker's wife was the private secretary to super agent Freddie Fields, whose clients included Steve McQueen. "The phone would ring at 3 o'clock in the morning and I'd say, 'Hello?' McQueen would say, 'Fraker, get off the [expletive] line and let me talk to your wife. I want to talk to Denise.' But he was great." Then there was the famous chase scene through the streets of San Francisco. A few years after Bullitt, Fraker's friend and fellow cinematographer Owen Roizman would shoot another classic chase in The French Connection. "I called Owen and said, You shot your chase scene under the train tracks in New York City. We had the hills in SF which helped our chase scene.' But I said, 'Owen, your chase scene was better than ours.' He says, 'Thank you Billy, but you did it first.'" |
