What Not to Watch

One of the biggest cheats of 2007, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, arrives on DVD today. Run, don't walk, away from this one, which is likely to gobble up prime display space at the video store. You may recall its big Christmas Day opening and its lavish ad campaign heralding the final showdown between two icons of sci-fi/horror flicks. If you didn't catch it then, you might think you missed something. You didn't.

Requiem is the kind of low-budget stinker that gives cheesy films a bad name. No scares, no suspense, no sense. Just a bunch of talent-free actors running around in the dark and some badly-filmed monsters doing likewise. (And why does so much of the action take place at night anyway? Is everyone in the Colorado town where the film takes place a vampire? Or did the film's producers think the darkness would make it harder for the audience to notice that nothing much is happening, despite a continuous barrage of "scary" music?)

Occasionally the actors run afoul of the monsters and get killed. Occasionally the monsters run afoul of each other and fight. The violence averse should have little problem with this film as the killings and monster battles are mostly hinted at through sound effects, music and choppy editing. Afterward comes the glimpse of a body covered in gloppy fake gore. Just one of several tell-tale signs that this movie was on a tight budget. The aforementioned cast of no-names is another one. The lack of a coherent script another. And "action" in the context of this film amounts to some reckless car driving.

Take a pass on this "current release" and opt for the original Alien, its first sequel, Aliens, or the original Predator instead.
