Me, Jewel and Dolph Lundgren: Together at last

So on Saturday I moderated an AFI Dallas panel at the Nasher with the esoteric title "Listening to the Crowd: How Much Does the Audience Influence the Artist's Voice?"
My co-panelists were Michael Addis, who made the documentary Heckler; Jewel, who is featured in said documentary; and the great Dolph Lundgren, killer of Apollo Creed and the man behind the new film Missionary Man.

There were some interesting moments.

Heckler is about how artists, primarily comedians, deal with criticism from fans and from critics (I don't really like being lumped in with the hecklers, but hey, it ain't my movie). The funniest part of the panel was when we got heckled by a guy in the audience. it seems we went off on a tangent about critics, and dude didn't appreciate it. Our bad. And very meta.

Jewel is no wilting flower, and she's not crazy about my kind. At one point I started to explain that I don't like critics who don't respect the craft. She took issue with the existence of craft in criticism. Harsh. She was nice about it though.

Lundgren: Pretty cool dude, and not stupid - he's got a master's degree in chemical engineering. He told a funny story about the guys at 97.9 The Beat getting on him for slaying Apollo in Rocky IV. "I Will Break You."
