Hellboy is one of the great unappreciated action/comic book movies of all time, and I think del Toro has the chops to pull this project off (although I'm still a little nervous about the so-called "Hobbit 2"). Two thumbs way down, though, for the rumored release dates of 2011 and 2012. On the other hand, my 4-year-old son may be old enough at that point to watch the movies in the theater, which would be a great way for me to ensure that my nerd-dom will live on in future generations. Also, I may have missed this elsewhere, but there's no word in the linked article about which actors from the Rings movie trilogy will reprise their roles in The Hobbit. No Ian McKellen would be a very bad thing. |

I must say I'm pleased about this news, and I'm not even a big LOTR fan. But I loved "Pan's Labyrinth." If del Toro can't make a fabuloso movie out of "The Hobbit," nobody can.
However, why must "The Hobbit" be filmed as two movies? It's not a lengthy tale. It's a children's classic that is less than 300 pages long -- and that's in the ILLUSTRATED edition.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is slated to become a two-part film, too -- but then, it is 759 pages long in the US edition (609 pages in the UK edition). And, sheesh: just explaining that whole business about who can become Master of the Elder Wand will probably take an hour in itself.
