Here's something wacky: a non-AFI blog item. I just got back from talking to one of my favorite actors, Chiwetel Ejiofor. He's exuded intelligence and range in Dirty Pretty Things, Talk to Me and American Gangster, among others, and now he's in David Mamet's upcoming Jiu-Jitsu film, Redbelt. The strongest impression from a 30-minute chat: This is a very international dude. I don't say that just because he was born in London to Nigerian parents. He just seems to think, and act, globally. He was a Nigerian doctor in Dirty Pretty Things and an African-American radio exec in Talk to Me. He'll be in Croatia for Three Way Split, and in South Africa (about the process of attaining democracy in that country) for End Game. He also just played the tragic Moor Othello on the London stage. We discussed the global impact of the Civil Rights movement (a subject that grew out of Talk to Me talk). Overall an engaging and brilliant guy. We'll have more on him and Redbelt - about a martial arts form with roots in Japan and Brazil - closer to its May 2 opening. |
