Winner, winner, chicken dinner
Despite sub-par reviews, the blackjack drama 21 proved to be a winning hand for Sony, taking in $24 million and the top spot at the box office. Meanwhile, Horton had a tough time hearing those Whos as more coins clinked into its coffers, bringing its three-week total to $118 million.
The up side
Luckily for 10,000 B.C., foreigners love dinosaurs. The prehistoric epic has earned $85 million domestically on a $105 million budget, but when you factor in the $143 million it has made abroad, the overall picture looks a lot better.
Bomb Squad
Another Iraq movie, another bomb. Stop-Loss, the MTV-produced tale of a soldier going on the lam when he's recalled to active duty, earned just $4.6 million despite solid reviews and a cast full of hot young things like Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum and Abbie Cornish.
Swami Sez
Swami must have picked last week with his eyes closed.
Prediction: Superhero Movie tops the box office with $19 million.
Result: Apparently the spoof craze is over (yay!). But that means Swami was $10 million and two places off on the prediction (boo).
Prediction: Stop-Loss is neither fish nor fowl, earning $6 million and a sixth-place finish.
Result: A little more foul that expected, finishing in eighth place.
Family first
It's another pick 'em weekend in terms of who will finish first, with a match-up featuring George Cloooney (Leatherheads) vs. Abigail Breslin (Nim's Island). And if you have been paying attention this year, you know where the box office bucks have been heading.
Prediction: The family flick Nim's Island wins the weekend with $19 million.
Win, place and show
So Leatherheads doesn't win gold, but will it be able to hold off The Ruins for the silver? Horror flicks have a pretty devoted audience, but then again, so does George Clooney.
Prediction: Leatherheads comes in second, earning at least $5 million more than The Ruins.
