AUSTIN - Last night I caught Super High Me, one of several films at SXSW about pot and the smoking thereof (others include Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, Humboldt County). The premise of this doc is a direct rip-off of Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me: Comedian Doug Benson, a regular toker, decided to abstain for 30 days, then do nothing but smoke for the following 30. He visits doctors and a shrink to determine how much his daily herb effects his daily functioning, and comes to the conclusion that he really, really likes smoking pot. Super High also incorporates a passionate defense of the medical marijuana movement and a states rights study of how California's Proposition 215 doesn't sit well with the feds, whom we see busting dispensaries in the Golden State. The film's saving grace is that Benson is a wickedly quick comedian, stoned or not (slightly more so when not). Addressing the crowd, which cheered at many points of the film (though, as far my nose could tell, didn't light up in the Paramount), Benson admitted he never got in touch with Spurlock, who is here with his new film Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? But one of his producers acknowledged that Mr. Super Size gave his consent. "I'm going to call my next movie "Osama, Where's My Weed," quipped Benson. , |

It was kind of a nice touch that they had Rice Krispie treats a the Super High Me party Friday night (again, everything seemed to be on the up and up as far as the illegal substances go). Still, kinda funny.
