The nerds are here in full force. No, I'm not dissing the socially challenged among us. But when one of the hot films at the festival is called Nerdcore Rising, the other N-word is fair game. Nerdcore rising, which screened for a raucous and nerdy crowd at the Alamo South Lamar late Sunday night, chronicles the rise of the nerdcore hip-hop movement. The movement's leader, MC Frontalot, wears a flashlight on his head and comes off a bit like a hip-hop Thomas Dolby. Speaking from a rap fan's perspective, he has some wicked wordplay but absolutely no flow, which, I suppose, is part of the routine. That and rapping about video and role-playing games. He has a wide following among the nerds. I'll be talking to Frontalot Tuesday afternoon, and will have a SXSNerd story at guidelive.com on Wednesday. Other films here that fit the bill include Second Skin, a doc that looks at the dark side of Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs); and Blip Festival, which follows some folks who make some pretty good electronic music with old video games. Sadly, many of them are too hip to qualify as genuine nerds.
