SXSW 2008: Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Last year, Universal brought the Judd Apatow comedy Knocked Up to SXSW, creating a buzz that propelled it to one of the biggest comedy hits of the year. And the studio seems to be sticking to the formula, as its Forgetting Sarah Marshall, also produced by Apatow, had its world premiere Monday night at the Paramount Theatre.
As much as I loved Knocked Up (it made my top 10 list this year), Forgetting Sarah Marshall is at least its equal.

This time around, Jasan Segel is the star (he played Seth Rogan's smarmy friend who hit on every woman in sight in Knocked Up). Segel also wrote the film, which centers on his breakup with the title character (Kristin Bell), the star of a CSI-like television show for which he writes the music. Turns out she's already moved on with an over-the-top British rock star (Russell Brand) and he's left heartbroken. When his step brother suggests he take off to Hawaii to clear his head, of course he winds up at the same resort that his ex and her beau are also vacationing at. Cue the awkwardness. And the laughs.
And the raunch. Forgetting Sarah Marshall goes for shock value laughs in the extreme, and the efforts pay off. To say any more would spoil the fun.
The good news for you is that the film will also play at AFI Dallas on Sunday, April 6 before opening wide on April 18. Buy a ticket and be ahead of the wave.

SOMETHING I FORGOT TO MENTION: Forgetting Sarah Marshall stars Jason Segel, Kristin Bell and Russell Brand and director Nicholas Stoller took the stage before the screening to introduce the film. Normally at SXSW, the talent will then return to the stage after the film for a quick Q&A. But not these folks. When I asked a Universal rep after the screening if they were going to be doing any press while in town, she informed me that they were already on a plane back to L.A. Flying to town for a 5 minute appearance -- now THAT is jet set.
