Chris Cooper, who can be seen in the new film Married Life, is a Kansas City native. But his people come from Texas. "I'm the only one that's not from Texas, going back generation to generation on both sides of my family," he told me recently. It seems his great-great grandfather once had a chance to get in on the ground floor of a fledgling city called Dallas. But it didn't quite work out. The 19th-century Mr. Cooper was a land surveyor by trade, and one of his jobs was surveying the streets of what would become Big D. "He was paid in land, and that land was in or around Dealey Plaza," says Mr.Cooper. "But he didn't think Dallas was going to amount to anything." So he journeyed North to found his own town: Dumas, Texas. Nice place. County seat of Moore County. But Dumas is No Dallas. "I think it's still a pretty small town," sighs Mr. Cooper.
