Kickin' it really old school
The prehistoric epic 10,000 B.C. didn't come close to matching the firepower of its March 2007 predecessor, 300, but it has plenty to be proud of. It easily won the weekend with $35.9 million and could have a solid second week as much of its potential audience is on spring break this week.
The up side
It's time we threw a little praise at Vantage Point. In its third week, the presidential-assassination tale held strong with $7 million and a third-place finish. That's good for $51.5 mil. overall, already well over its $40 million price tag.
Bomb Squad
It would have been tough last week to call Semi-Pro a bomb with it sitting atop the box-office heap. But now there's no doubt, as the supposed Will Ferrell comedy saw its second weekend gross plummet 61.6 percent from its opening weekend, easily the steepest drop of any film in the top 10.
Swami Sez
The Swami will stop spending your money so freely.
Prediction: 10,000 B.C. will win the weekend with ease, but not on the same scale as 300. Let's say $42 million.
Result: Everything was correct until that second sentence.
Prediction: College Road Trip finishes at a healthy No. 2 and $20 million.
Result: No. 2, yes, but not quite as healthy, with only $13.6 million.
Dr. Seuss on the loose!
Evolution will occur at the top of the charts this week, from the mammoths of 10,000 B.C. to the elephants of Horton Hears a Who! But which one will earn more money in its first weekend?
Prediction: Horton tops 10,000 B.C.'s opening weekend with $40 million and an easy No. 1.
Seeing red
An interesting battle should unfold between the weekend's other two wide releases, Doomsday and Never Back Down, both significantly more bloodthirsty than Horton. But which will hack its way the highest up the ladder?
Prediction: Never Back Down opens in about 700 more theaters, so let's go with it, at $9 million.
