AFI Dallas: Opening night

Thursday night at the Majestic Theatre, Helen Hunt screened her directorial debut, Then She Found Me, as the festival's opening night movie. But her fellow Star Award recipient, Mickey Rooney, was really the one who held the spotlight the most.
The 87-year-old legend took the stage and told stories about his life and career in showbiz. And then he told some more. And then a few more after that. If you've ever listened to your grandpa talk about the olden days, it was kind of like that.
Which is not to say it wasn't both entertaining and heartfelt.

On the entertaining side were out-of-left-field tales about buying tamales "two for a nickel" in Kansas City and performing a vaudville act eight shows a week in New York for four years.
But he also talked about the pain of divorce (which the eight-time groom knows plenty about) in what felt at times like a public service announcement.
"I was married to Ava Gardner when I was 21," he said, at which point an audience member interrupted him with a hearty, "Whoo!"
"Yeah...whoo," he deadpanned.
Most of the heartfelt moments were reserved for his wife, Jan, who accompanied him. When she headed up to the stage to coax him down, he was smart enough to let people know that one of the main things he's learned in his many years is to, "listen to my wife."
And with that, a screen legend moved it along.
