Many questions came to mind when the Oscar nominations were announced: Who's going to win best picture? Why wasn't Once nominated more than once?

Does anyone care anymore?

It's not the kind of question anyone in Tinseltown would ask aloud. However, the entertainment industry must surely be wondering if its biggest night has started, like the pictures in Sunset Boulevard, to become small.

I'd say I still do, but not as much as before. They're not as ridiculous as the Grammys or Emmys, but they still make plenty of mistakes (take this year's Song category for instance), and it's rare that they're choice for Best Pictures matches mine. Heck, my choices are rarely even nominated. To quote Morrissey, "I still love you. Only slightly, only slightly less than I used to."

I actually had great fun last year writing a column about why I don't care about the Oscars. But I don't know if the problem is that I don't care, or that I have to act like I do. I love movies. Oscars? Not so much.

No.

You obviously care--look how much space you're devoting to it. This discussion reminds me of the time during the O.J. Simpson trial when the News took up almost an entire page for a story about how the media was spending too much time and energy covering the Simpson case and ignoring more important news

I'd be lying if I said I didn't. I think the problem is that the films are being released earlier in the season now. That means the nominated films aren't as easy to find for the casual movie fan as when most of them were released in December.

Pete - Part of my job is prognosticating about the Oscars. I get paid for it. Please don't confuse this for thinking who wins or loses is a matter of any consequence.
