It wasn't an upset - the Enchanted songs canceled each other out, and they simply weren't as good. But Falling Slowly is still the best underdog story of the night. Once was made for next to nothing, and it is about the power of music. Great line by Stewart after Hansard's humble acceptance: "Man is that guy arrogant." And very nice touch letting Irglova come back out to say her piece after the commercials. |

Junior producer in the truck: "cue the move 'em out music."
Senior producer: "NO NOT YET."
I'm glad they brought her back.

This is the winner I was rooting for the most tonight. Once was No. 1 on my Top 10 list this year, and it's great that it is going home with an award. When I interviewed Glen Hansard in December, I asked him what it would mean if we won an Oscar. He said, "I don't want to be selfish and be like 'Oh, my God, I'd love that!' But I know my mother would ... [expletive] love it."
Looks like Glen's Ma is probably over the moon tonight.

Pretty sure I wouldn't watch the Oscars again for some time if they had given this award to anything other 'Once.'
Also, don't you think Glen and Marketa being a real-life couple is the perfect coda to that film?

I have been a champion of this amazing song since even before I saw ONCE. A little over a year ago, Hewlett-Packard emailed me a video the HP folks had just shot offstage at the Sundance Film Festival, where ONCE made its initial impression on U.S. audiences.
That HP video just blew me away, and I've been a fan ever since. I've never seen Glen and Marketa sing "Falling Slowly" better than they did in this impromptu, outdoor concert in the snow -- while, as Glen says, "the birds sing on."
