For those of us who appreciate acting over starpower, this is a huge loss. Ledger wasn't the kind of guy who felt like he needed to be in three movies a year to advance the Heath Ledger brand. Instead, he picked and chose his roles carefully, most notably for one of my very favorite performances of the last 10 years in Brokeback Mountain. In that film, he created this wholly formed character, and as good as Philip Seymour Hoffman was the same year in Capote, in my opinion Ledger should have won the Oscar for this performance. He'll still be seen as the Joker in The Dark Knight this summer, and you can bet it won't be a hammy, money-grab performance.

This is very sad. You're right, Stephen, he took chances. Aside from Brokeback, I thought he was great in Monster's Ball (in which his character met a sad fate), Lords of Dogtown and I'm Not There. He had talent, and he didn't use it cheaply.

Wow...didn't see this one coming. Such a lost of great up a coming talent.

Truly a sad loss. I am still in shock and I send out my prayers to his family and friends.

I know I speak for many, he will be missed greatly. I loved everything he did. He was beautiful inside and out. I hope that the media respect him enough to let him go in peace.
