Smile, you won: Javier Bardem looms large in No Country (Miramax)

The National Board of Review has commenced the annual glut of movie awards lists by picking No Country for Old Men as the best film of 2007. Soon top ten lists will be pouring in from precints worldwide (ours will run Dec. 28).

The rest of the NBR list, in alphabetical order:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Atonement
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Bucket List
Into the Wild
Juno
The Kite Runner
Lars and the Real Girl
Michael Clayton
Sweeney Todd

Tim Burton was named best director for Sweeney Todd. Julie Christie is best actress for Away from Her, George Clooney best actor for Michael Clayton.

I'm pretty shocked to see 'Bourne Ultimatum' up there. Not that it's undeserving, but it's very populist. And 'The Bucket List'? Really? Maybe there's a much deeper emotional core than the Jack-and-Morgan-skydiving trailer would lead you to believe.

No Country really seems to be picking up steam, partly due to the fact that some of the movies everyone expected to be Oscar contenders aren't living up to their promise. Notice that Charlie Wilson's War, which practically screams, "Nominate me!" with its cast, director and timely topic, couldn't crack the NBoR list.

This is probably one of those years where the Academy may settle on something that's good, but not great (because the great movies don't have a great campaign, came out too early in the year, etc). But don't get me wrong, I do love 'No Country.' Although, as much as the Academy loves Mike Nichols, I'm having trouble remembering the last movie of his that garnered anything more than a couple acting nods.
