The black suitcase-shaped box arrived on my desk with a heavy thud. Ford at Fox, a handsome collection of 24 films directed by John Ford for 20th Century Fox, comes with its own coffee table book of photos and poster art. After you watch the films you can use the set to do curls. Ford is best known for his brawny, humanist Westerns, including Stagecoach, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. But FAF glories in lesser-known jewels. Yeah, The Grapes of Wrath is here, but so are silent classics like The Iron Horse, a railroad epic presented here in two different versions. You could surf through this set for weeks and still have more to watch. As Dave Kehr points out in his NYT DVD coulmn, Ford made more than 140 films. Which means this monster set represents less than a fifth of his total output. Which won't make your back hurt any less after lifting it. |

I'd be happy to take that monstrosity of a DVD set off of your hands. I could use a good gift for my family gift exchange. ;)

Sorry, MJ. Though I do appreciate your generous offer. Thanks for the TCM tip. I'm dying to watch some of them, espcially the silents.

Hard to believe that John Ford directed Wee Willie Winkie. DMN writer Joshua Benton recently blogged about Graham Greene's scathing review of the sexualized portrayal of Shirley Temple in that movie. Greene's review got him a libel lawsuit, leading him to flee to Mexico.
