Is being Oscar-worthy bad?

Russell Crowe made an interesting comment about American Gangster in an interview with co-star Denzel Washington in the Nov. 2 issue of 'Entertainment Weekly':

EW: There's already Oscar buzz around American Gangster and your performances. Is it hard not to get invested in it when you hear that?
WASHINGTON: What are you going to do? There's no Oscar gym you go to to get in Oscar shape. There's not much you can do about it. If you get invited to the show, you go. The work is done. You know what? It beats a sharp stick in the eye that people are talking about it. That's gravy.
CROWE: Let's not discourage people from going to see it, though.
WASHINGTON: By saying it's Oscar-worthy?
CROWE: I think it just gets into a ho-hum thing. ...

So what do you think? Does a film's Oscar buzz put people off?

It's possible. It seems like lately any movie with Oscar "buzz" doesn't equate to big box office. Most of the movies that get nominated for Best Picture are either popular already, or get that way AFTER the nomination. Most of this year's "buzzed about movies" like 'Assassination of Jesse James' and 'Into the Wild' have barely made a dent in terms of ticket sales, and they probably won't unless they get some serious nods. But in the case of 'American Gangster,' all people will ask themselves is, "Do I like Russell Crowe and/or Denzel Washington?" Since the answer will probably be emphatically "yes," I don't think the Oscar buzz will help or hurt this movie.
