Musician biopics are nothing new. But Across the Universe and I'm Not There are taking new spins on reality. Which music icon's story would you like to see grace the silver screen? |

That's easy...Sam Cooke. Like all bio-doc type pics, the proof is all in the casting. I don't know anyone that's out there that could play Sam. However, his story, from his angelic start with the Soul Stirrers to his rise through the countries music and cultural consciousness to his tragic and still controversial death...well, THAT'S a story that needs to be told.
I think about that story every time I hear his note bending, silky smooth voice. And every time I do i remind myself that it's probably better to leave The Man and His Music alone.

I liked I'm Not There, not so much on Across the Universe. But what I admire about both of them is that neither will ever be confused for a biopic. I'm sure something new can still be done in musical biopicland, but it's a pretty tired enterprise at this point. Though I still want to see Ma Vie en Rose, the Edith Piaf film from earlier this year.

I'm very excited to see 'Control,' Anton Corbijn's take on the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. I hope the film also goes into how his death led to the formation of one of my all-time favorite bands, New Order.
But I'd still like to see the three that have been floating around the rumor mill for some time:
-Jimi Hendrix (at one time it was rumored that Andre 3000 would play the guitar god)
-Janis Joplin (Renee Zellweger was attached at one point)
-Phil Lynott, the lead singer of Thin Lizzy (Gary Dourdan of 'CSI' was rumored to play him)
