Going back for refills
A question: Did you all really like the movies that were already out, or were the new movies just not that appealing? Last week’s top three movies remained unchanged (though The Bourne Ultimatum did leapfrog Rush Hour 3) as Superbad retained the title with $18 million. That brings this starless wonder’s total to an impressive $68 million.
The up side
Hollywood’s wallet was fatter than ever this summer as the industry recorded its first $4 billion summer. That figure tops 2004’s previous record of $3.95 billion. And lest we forget, Hollywood’s summer runs through Labor Day weekend, so the record run isn’t over yet.
Bomb Squad
No new release preformed particularly well as none of them could crack the top three positions on the chart. But consider Resurrecting the Champ the worst among equals, as its $1,034 per-theater average was the lowest of any film in the top 20. Dreamy as he is, Josh Hartnett does not a movie carry.
Swami sez
With these results, Swami should get into predicting the weather.
Prediction: Superbad retains the title at $23 million.
Result: No. 1 yes, but a little short on the total.
Prediction: WAR finishes second at $19 million.
Result: Try fifth with $9.8 million.
Calling Michael Myers
Haven’t we all seen Halloween before? But wait – this one’s directed by Rom Zombie! No matter – nothing else out this weekend can compete with this latest edition of the venerable horror franchise.
Prediction: Halloween scares up $24 million for an easy No. 1.
Life for ‘Death’?
The only other movie coming out Friday with a wide release (keeping in mind that Balls of Fury has been out since Wednesday) is Kevin Bacon’s Death Sentence. It’s opening on a little more than half the number of screens as Halloween, but here’s betting it won’t make half of Halloween’s total.
Prediction: Death Sentence manages just a sixth place opening at $8 million.
