Hairspray: The original

Cool vintage interview with John Waters this morning on Fresh Air (available locally on KERA-90.1 FM). For youngsters out there, Waters wrote and directed the original Hairspray back in 1988. Instead of John Travolta in a fat suit, it starred frequent Waters collaborator and ample transvestite Divine. It was also the first Waters film to get a PG rating, an unthinkable idea at the time for a filmmaker known for indulging in campy, grotesque taboo (see Pink Flamingos, which is unlikely to be turned into a family-friendly musical any time soon). And read Theater Critic Lawson Taitte's review of the new Hairspray Friday on GuideLive.com.

I'm excited about 'Hairspray.' I love the music, even though the John Waters version seemed a little creepy to me. I have to say, though, I was much more excited when the buzz was Justin Timberlake would play Linc.

Incidentially, I also saw HBO's "Making of ..." feature on 'Hairspray.' My favorite part? When Travolta likened the 'Hairspray' experience to "exactly what you got with 'Grease'." Because everybody going to see 'Hairspray' remembers 'Grease.' (I do!)

Yeah, let's see "Pink Flamingos: The Musical" try and win an armful of Tonys.

Oh, I'm hoping for a teeny bit of that John Waters-ish creepiness to remain. Otherwise, it just wouldn't be Hairspray. I'm a fan, though I'm not going to be performing it on the subway any time soon (a la Justin in one of my favorite Ugly Betty scenes of all time--"My son's going to finish telling me about The Hairspray, and when he's done, you better clap.").

I loved Lawson's review of Hairspray. This is one of my faves for the year (along with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, of course). Nikki Blonsky showed a star quality that made me think of Streisand in Funny Girl. But I think what I loved as much as the music, the look, the performances, the uplifting spirit, was the message about inclusion and taking a stand against prejudice of all kinds.

I have to see it because I miss home (Baltimore) and John Waters more than I ever thought I would. I actually caught myself telling someone that Baltimore was this "excellent" place the other day. Anyway, one of Waters' tamer films, but exploding just the way he wants it to.

Waters has a really funny wordless cameo in the first scene. Not hard to spot.
